Our third annual London to Paris bike ride took place over the weekend of September 4th to 6th. This was our biggest, most successful and probably most fun so far. We had 44 cyclists who between them have raised a total of £38,744 £40,014 to date (with sponsorship still open).

The core of the group for the third year running was work colleagues from EMC. However there was a large contingent of professional partners, customers, friends and other-halves joining in this year. This eclectic group took in a group of lady triathletes / cyclists from the US who were nearly as fit as they were puncture prone ; the maddest, baddest and funnest group of Italian cyclists; doctors whose specialities you hoped no one would have need for on the ride; and for the first time all three trustees of the charity. A heady mix of people treading delicately on the right side of disorder. Usually.

We set off from Southwark, in the forecourt of the LSE Bankside House (thank you to the LSE for allowing us to use this as a meeting point). As the first support car and drivers arrived before 8am, there was a gradual build-up of numbers and anticipation as more riders and support teams came in. The excitement was palpable as news spread that one of our number had secured over £1,000 to ride naked. He appeared fully clothed, and logistics instantly became more complex trying to ensure he would get through and out of London without police incident.

The day passed well, with no arrest or public protestation, save that from the team that cycled with (or most disturbingly, behind) our naked rider. An exceptional spread for lunch was served up at the end of an exceptionally steep rise at Turner’s Hill. The support team set the tone for the quality of lunches early, and didn’t disappoint through the whole 3 days. Most of the cyclists made it to Newhaven in plenty of time for the pre-booked pub dinner, while the touring group took it upon themselves to show our friends from across the Atlantic the delights of other British pubs in the last leg of the ride. From Newhaven, a ferry crossing to Dieppe was only marred by ugly scenes of adults grappling to see who could sleep in the children’s ball-pit, as this was undoubtedly the most comfortable part of the ferry to lay down in. I hasten to add that there were no children in the vicinity.

After an all-too brief sleep in Dieppe, we set off down a long cycle path through beautiful Normandy countryside heading for lunch in Gournay-en-Bray. Almost all the group made it there in time. The two stragglers who had no hope of making Gournay before dinner, let alone lunch, were found by the support team, who in a display typical of their empathy with the riders, delivered baguettes to order without the slightest hint of the condescension which the laggards deserved.

We ended the day in Chantilly in the Casa Nostra restaurant, with good food delivered by incredibly cheerful staff who were only too pleased to recommend and provide the local killer apple liqueur, Manzana Verde. And after the toasts of thanks to participants and supporters, Giancarlo through a translator movingly toasted the children of Gaza.

The final day, as always, was the easiest and most pleasant. One of the best parts of the ride is seeing Paris open up in front of you on day three along the canal, a route which you can only do on foot or bike. So we met for a group lunch, then the annual last day lunchtime group photo, before starting this final most satisfying ride into Paris. On arrival, we packed the cafe opposite Gare du Nord, with a smattering of other halves and friends joining for what turned out to be an eventful few days for those who stayed in Paris to make the most of 3 days of sweat!

This year, we managed to use some of the funds before we’d even got the event under way. 800 children from the harshest areas of Gaza were treated to a summer camp experience thanks to your actions and generosity. Thank you.

Credits…

Thank you first and foremost to a great team of volunteers who organised the event, most notably Michelle, Anitza, Rachel and Mark, and a number of other great men and women too numerous to mention who supported them.

Then also to the remarkable support team, which provided nourishment for bodies and spirits, equipment, sympathy, foresight, encouragement, humour, and all manner of support for expected and unanticipated events. But couldn’t muster a Mojito out of thin air for riders en route to Chantilly – for which they are more than forgiven! Alan and Phil, Rachel and Rob, Mark and Anitza – you are all stars of the first order, and if I were to have more children, I’d name them after each one of you.

A special thank you to Alan’s Landrover. A tardis on wheels if ever there was one. And Alan had taken the time and effort to equip it with the most startling but ultimately useful collection of items, each causing a bigger gasp than the last as Alan would unfurl it from the cavern.

To our sponsors – you made this an awesome year where we’ve raised more than the last two years combined. We are above the £35,000 mark, so thank you hugely for your support to the riders and charity. This is what we did the ride for, and you will make a difference in a land where the children badly need the support.

To our riders – all 44 of you who made it. Clearly your doing it is the event. If you hadn’t been up for this, nothing else would have happened. And not only did you do a tremendous job of getting support and sponsorship, but you were also more fun to ride with than anyone could have expected. Thank you.
